Watermelon One-Act Festival at St. Mary’s College

Watermelon, Inc. is a Leonardtown, Maryland based organization dedicated to the theatre arts and to providing a nurturing environment for original works.

This weekend, June 1 – 2, 2013, opens the first Watermelon One-Act Festival, hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

The festival features 10 one-act plays written by Maryland playwrights who are competing for awards worth more than $1,000.

Three or four plays will be performed and adjudicated by qualified professionals during each of three performance sessions on Saturday June 1, 2013. Top scoring plays will compete in the finals on Sunday June 2 at 2 PM and the winning play, director, actor, and actress will receive awards during the ceremony following the finals.

During each Saturday session and the Sunday finals audience members have the opportunity to vote for their favorite play, which determine the “Wild Card” finalist and the $250 Audience Choice Award.

 The competition schedule is as follows: June 1, 11 AM – Trish Cole’s Field Guide to the North American Osprey, R. Elwood’s Middle Ground, James H. Wise’s Mugger in the Park, Jeremy Hunter’s Adolescence; 3 PM – James H. Wise’s This Play Sucks, Lois Stephenson’s Back to Kathmandu, R. DaSilva’s Soon; 7 PM – Peter S. Coburg’s Vicky, Kaylin Beach’s A Lifetime, James H. Wise’s Daddy’s Pride and Joy.

Ticket prices are $20 per Saturday session and $28 for the Sunday Finals and Awards Ceremony beginning at 2 PM (includes free food and beverages). A festival pass for all sessions and the finals is available for $80. Students (with valid I.D.), seniors, or groups of three adults or more can deduct $5 from the price. All tickets will be sold at the door and only cash and check will be accepted (no credit cards). Only ticket holders may vote for their favorite play. No reservations are necessary. All performances will be held at the Bruce Davis Theater, located in Montgomery Hall Fine Arts Center at SMCM on June 1-2, 2013.
