Watercolor Workshop Set at Annmarie

Watercolor

Watercolor paintings can be simple or complicated, with intense foregrounds or washed out backgrounds. Learn how to master this amazing and versatile technique at a Watercolor Workshop at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center.

The next Watercolor Workshop is scheduled from 10 am to 3:30 pm April 19 and 20, 2016, at Annmarie. The cost is $130 for members, $140 for nonmembers, with a $10 materials fee due to the instructor at the class. Be sure to pre-register.

Nancy Thompson will lead this workshop, teaching participants to create stunning florals in watercolor. Ms. Thompson will take the students through step-by-step techniques to create better paintings through the study of composition, color mixing and background techniques.

You don’t have to have any painting experience to enjoy this workshop, but if you do, there will still be plenty to learn – it’s a great workshop for all skill levels. The $10 materials fee makes it possible for you to use any of the instructor’s supplies.

While there is a huge variation in the kinds of watercolor paints and supplies available – from the cheapest hardened paints in a plastic tray to the most lush and vibrant colors in tubes – all of these paints have their place in a student’s pallet. You can learn to use even the hardest paints to create something, or you can invest in better paints and heavy paper made especially for these wet paints. The techniques for this medium are as varied as the personalities of the artists, from dry brush to wet brush and everything in between.

Come and learn to create beautiful paintings in the workshop, and then decide if you want to continue painting enough different pieces to cover every wall in your home.

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie Garden is in Solomons. The sculpture garden features a walking path that meanders through the forest past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than 35 works of art on loan from the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art.
