As Walden Continues to grow and offer new and varying services to community members, we look back on the origins of the organization during their 40th year of service.

Originally Walden began as a place people in St. Mary’s could go to seek help for drug and alcohol addiction during a time when such addictions were very much stigmatized in the community. Over time the organization has grown and changed to meet the needs of those seeking help and continues to do so.

This year Walden has opened a new facility to give teens a safe, clean environment to go to learn and enforce healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors. Additions to the Walden staff have been made in the form of licensed psychiatrists and further plans are in place to continue to expand the range of services offered by the organization.

From the beginning Walden staff have recognized the need to not only treat the physical aspects of addiction and behavioral illnesses but the psychological aspects as well. They recognize that behavioral health is a lifelong journey, unique to each and every one of the individuals seeking care from them, and adjust their treatment accordingly.

Michael Whitson, one of the original staff members at Walden, talks about how Walden recognized the need to treat all aspects of health.
