VEX Robotics Competition Set at CSM

VEX robotics competition

College of Southern Maryland will host the Robotics Senior Division VEX competition Feb. 4, 2017, with support from The Patuxent Partnership. The Senior Division uses the VEX Robotics Design System for its competition platform.

Every April, a new challenge for the competition is announced. For 2017, the challenge is VEX Robotics Competition Starstruck. Every team must build a robot to compete in the challenge. During the championship event, judges interview the teams for awards.

Structure of the Tournament

The VEX Robotics Competition game committee sets the rules for the game play. This year, there will be separate divisions for middle and high school teams. After being ranked in their individual schools, the teams will be ranked on the morning of the League Championship on Feb. 4.

High school and middle school VEX leagues are officially recognized leagues affiliated with the VEX Robotics Competition and REC Foundation. Partnership with VEX allows the winners of the tournament to represent Southern Maryland at the VRC State Championship, where they have the chance to advance to the VRC World Championship.

More information about starting and coaching a team is available on their VRC Teams webpage.

Volunteers Needed

CSM is providing a large number of staff, faculty, and students for the day of the event, but each team is also required to have at least one volunteer to help out. Volunteers may sign up on the Volunteer Signup page. The access code is csmrobotics.

To Compete

Teams that want to compete can register through RobotEvents. Registration fees and other costs may be paid for teams in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. Costs are often covered by the CSM Foundation STEM sponsors. Teams in the tri-county area may contact the college for more specific information about registration and costs.

The event will be held at the CSM La Plata Campus in the Science and Technology Building. For more information about the event, email [email protected].
