The Fort Lauderdale Air Show soared over the skies of south Florida during this past weekend. This was the first time in a few years for the show due to sequestration budget cuts. Some of the stars of the show were the F-35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter and the Air Force Thunderbirds, Local10 News reports. Patuxent River Naval Air Station’s show is scheduled for Oct. 27-30, 2016. The Blue Angels will be headlining the Pax River show.

A book — “The F-35 and 21st Century Defence: Shaping a Way Ahead” — has been published. It is about the arrival of the F-35 and its interactive role with other key innovations, which are reshaping defense forces. The book draws on hundreds of visits with pilots, maintainers, testers, industrialists and visits in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East discussing the F-35 and how it is viewed, Second Line of Defense reports.

An AV-8B Harrier crashed Friday in the Atlantic Ocean off the East Coast. The pilot was listed in stable condition, Defense News reports, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

With tensions rising in the South China Sea, US ships are returning to the Philippines. “That means U.S. and Chinese ships sailing in close proximity, deepening an already tense and dangerous standoff,” The Washington Post reports.

US News & World Report notes that China’s navy has launched its annual war drills in the South China Sea with one of its most advanced warships.

North Korea’s leader Kim Jung Un has released his country’s five year plan. North Korea won’t use its nuclear weapons “unless its sovereignty is encroached upon by any aggressive hostile forces with nukes,” CNN reports.

The US is entering into a newer, more difficult phase in the fight against Islamic State militants, The Washington Post reports. Pentagon officials say it will mean a deeper level of involvement for the US.

In the past month, there have been three military incidents in the Baltic region involving Russia, The New York Times reports. White House officials believe Russia is demonstrating its anger over the increased American military presence in a region.

A recent market survey shows that the global unmanned underwater vehicle market will reach $4 billion by 2020, C4ISR & Networks reports. UUVs for the military will see strong growth due to “rising demand of anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasure, and undersea surveillance purposes,” according to the report.

An investigative report by The Virginian Pilot shows all was not well aboard the USNS Comfort hospital ship in the years prior to its current captain’s arrival in 2015.

Applied Research Associates Inc., Albuquerque, NM (W911QX-16-D-0015); Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., McLean, VA (W911QX-16-D-0016);  EOIR Technologies Inc., Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD (W911QX-16-D-0017); and Leidos Inc., Reston, VA (W911QX-16-D-0018); were awarded a $249,781,641 cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple award task order contract for persistent surveillance – intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (PS-ISR) analytic software research and development.  Bids were solicited via the Internet with four received, with an estimated completion date of May 5, 2021. Funding and work location will be determined with each order. Army Contracting Command, Adelphi, MD, is the contracting activity.
