St.Mary’s Schools Host STEM Expo Jan. 29, 2013

LEONARDTOWN, MD – The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) EXPO will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center.

The STEM EXPO is an opportunity for parents, students, community members, and anyone else interested in St. Mary’s County Public Schools’ STEM Academy, to ask question and talk with current STEM students and teachers.  Student work samples and exhibits will be on display during the EXPO.

The aviation industry contributes toward the development of STEM programming in the schools. Government contracting firms include Sabre Systems, Inc. which locally launched and awarded scholarships to STEM students.

The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) announced late last week its award of  a $250,000 STEM grant from the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD). The funds are earmarked for  software and equipment to create an environment for students to learn to fly aircraft, manage air traffic and perform missions similar to operations on NAS Patuxent River. The underlying applications of the curriculum are the principles of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In partnership with St. Mary’s County Public Schools, TPP will use the funds to build an Aviation Classroom Experience (ACE), a program associated with the National Flight Academy (NFA) located in Pensacola, Florida.

Next year’s STEM Academy will include students in grades 4 – 12.  For more information on the STEM Academy, please visit http://www.smcps.org/stem or contact Ms. Tracey Heibel, Supervisor of Instruction, Science/STEM, at 301-475-5511, ext. 135.
