Spotlight on STEM 2013

The CSM Robotics Challenge, being held Saturday, April 13, has reached more than 5,000 participants over the years to become the premier robotics competition for elementary and middle school teams in Southern Maryland. The competition provides future engineers and scientists an opportunity to spotlight their skills and talents.

The event is part of the Spotlight on STEM series, hosted by College of Southern Maryland and other key partners, which include a variety of community outreach events and activities expected to draw more than 3,500 students, educators, and industry leaders passionate about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in Southern Maryland.

CSM and other educators are inspiring, shaping and advancing the future of the STEM workforce in Southern Maryland. The College aims to increase STEM awareness and inspire more than 700 K-12 students to major in STEM fields in college; improve STEM career transition assistance programs for qualified job seekers; promote student success by bringing together more than 200 of the region’s educators and business leaders; and provide STEM scholarships to support CSM students studying a STEM discipline.

CSM’s robotics coordinator, Bernice Brezina, explains more about robotics competitions and their role in STEM education:
