The Patuxent Partnership is pleased to be the organization sponsor of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics – Inspiring the Next Generation (STEM-ING), a local initiative to host a one-day event to heighten awareness of STEM and STEM careers for middle school girls.

STEM-ING is open to sixth- through eighth- grade girls from the Tri-County region. It will be held May 3, 2014, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. TPP is actively seeking volunteers, sponsors, and monetary donations to support this educational initiative.

Last year, the initiative operated as a chapter of the national Expanding Your Horizons Network. This year, the same core group will be hosting an identical STEM event, but operating as the independent, locally created group, STEM-ING.

To learn more about STEM-ING, the organization operating the May workshop there is an information session  being held Tuesday, Jan. 28:

STEM-Inspiring the Next Generation Community Information Session
will be held 5:30 – 7pm, Jan. 28
at the Lexington Park Library, Meeting Room-B

STEM-ING aims to expand beyond the currently targeted audience of female middle school students by including male middle school or female high school students in future initiatives.

The 2014 STEM-ING event in May will introduce middle school girls to local STEM professionals as positive role models. Hands-on workshops will introduce the girls to STEM in challenging, engaging, and practical ways. Workshop materials, lunch, snacks throughout the day and all activities will be included for 140 student participants.
