Historic Sotterley, in partnership with St. Mary’s Library and Maryland Humanities, announces St. Mary’s County History Day will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Leonardtown Library.

This year’s theme, “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History,” challenges students to investigate pivotal moments in history, differing perspectives on those moments, and how they impacted the events that came after.

The deadline to submit projects is April 11.

St. Mary’s County History Day is the district-level contest affiliated with Maryland History Day and National History Day, offering students in grades 4 through 12 the opportunity to conduct in-depth research and present their findings in one of five categories: Paper, Exhibit, Documentary, Website, and Performance.

Winners from St. Mary’s County History Day have the opportunity to advance to the Maryland History Day competition on May 2.

To help celebrate and reward outstanding student achievement, Historic Sotterley is seeking special awards sponsors for the 2026 contest. Community organizations, businesses, and individuals are invited to support specific categories and recognize exceptional student work.

Those interested in sponsoring a special award should email Katherine Humphries at [email protected].

St. Mary’s County History Day continues to provide opportunities for students to engage in history and social studies in the ways that are meaningful to them while strengthening critical skills.

Historic Sotterley and its partners look forward to another year of exceptional scholarship and creativity.
