Smoking Cessation Classes Start Oct. 11

Health Department

Get help to quit by attending free smoking cessation classes at the St. Mary’s County Health Department in Leonardtown, MD, each Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 pm starting Oct. 11, 2016, and ending Nov. 29, 2016. This program is supported by MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and a grant from the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund.

The free classes are held one hour per week for eight weeks, and include free medication to help you quit. Smoking cessation classes provide support from a group of other people who are also trying to quit, as well as experts who understand what you’re going through and how to help you through it.

Group support has been shown to increase the chances of successfully quitting, and class participants also gain knowledge about the smoking habit, as well as tips on modifying behavior, stress management, and quitting techniques.

Enroll today by calling 301-475-4330 or 301-475-4074.

The use of tobacco products and exposure to second-hand smoke combined represent the No. 1 cause of preventable deaths in the US. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and affecting the health of smokers in general. Quitting smoking has both immediate and long-term benefits.

The help of the community is needed to most effectively help tobacco users quit the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products, prevent youth and others from starting to use tobacco products, and to help nonsmokers avoid exposure to second-hand smoke.

Take part in a smoking cessation class to learn about the benefits of quitting, like more money because you’re not buying expensive cigarettes, better health from lungs to skin to heart and even brain, and even better relationships as you are not sent outside every time you need to smoke.
