SMECO Nominating Committee to Meet

The nine members of the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative 2016 SMECO Nominating Committee will meet Saturday, May 7, 2016, to select a slate of candidates for the five available positions on the SMECO Board of Directors. Elections for the positions will be held at SMECO’s 2016 Annual Members’ Meeting.

The open seats include one position in Calvert County, two positions in Charles County, one in St. Mary’s County, and one in Prince George’s County.

2016 Nominating Committee members include:

  • Calvert County: Terence N. Gibson, Prince Frederick.
  • Charles County: Joseph L. Gardiner Jr., La Plata; Edward Holland III, Waldorf; and William B. Young Jr., Waldorf.
  • Prince George’s County: Manning Clagett, Accokeek; and Ernest H. Riess, Brandywine.
  • St. Mary’s County: Edith M. Bell, Chaptico; George A. Brown, Loveville; and Catherine Brenda Coates, Lexington Park.

Customer-members of SMECO who would like to be nominated must complete a Board of Directors Candidate Application. Get an application by contacting Terrie Krupitzer at 240-528-9747 or at [email protected].

Complete the application and submit it to SMECO, Attention: Joseph Densford, Board Attorney, by Friday, April 29, 2016. Applications may be mailed to P.O. Box 1937, Hughesville, MD 20637, or delivered to Terrie Krupitzer at 15035 Burnt Store Road in Hughesville.

If a person is not nominated by the committee, he or she can still be nominated by petition with the support of 15 or more SMECO members. The petition must be completed by Friday, June 24, 2016.

Those running by petition also need to complete and submit a Board of Directors Candidate Application. Members can find out about the nominees by seeing the posting in each SMECO office, and the information will be mailed to every member along with the Annual Meeting notice.

SMECO’s annual meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf. Any customer-member who cannot attend the meeting can vote by absentee mail-in voting. Request an absentee mail-in ballot after July 25 by calling 1-888-440-3311 or by going to SMECO’s website at www.smeco.coop. More information will be published in the cooperative’s monthly newsletter.

Nominating committee members were selected according to SMECO’s bylaws. For information about the committee, nominations, and qualifications of directors, refer to Article IV, Sections 4.02 and 4.03, of SMECO’s bylaws. Bylaws can be found at a SMECO office or on SMECO’s website.
