SMECO CFO Among Top 100 Women

Top 100

Sonja Cox, the chief financial officer at Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, has been named by The Daily Record to its 2016 list of Maryland’s Top 100 Women.

Ms. Cox has been with SMECO since 1999, and has been the CFO and senior vice president of financial, economic, and employee services since 2006. Her service, however, does not stop at SMECO. She is on the board of directors of the Maryland State Chamber of Commerce; is on the audit committee of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland and the College of Southern Maryland; and is a past member of the board of directors of the Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board and Calvert County Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Cox earned a bachelor of science in accounting from the University of Maryland and a master of business administration degree from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to all of that, she is a certified public accountant and graduate of Leadership Maryland.

Since 1996, The Daily Record has been recognizing achievements by women with its Top 100 list. These women have demonstrated professional accomplishments, leadership, and found ways to mentor others.

There were 350 nominees this year vying for the statewide honor. Those nominated had to complete an application that gave the details of their education and career history, community and professional involvement, memberships on corporate and nonprofit boards, and their experience being mentors. Associates also could submit letters of recommendation.

“Maryland’s Top Women 100 honorees are exemplary citizens, committed to their communities, creating change and growing the next generation of leaders through mentoring,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record. “This year’s honorees also share an amazing talent for balancing the many facets of their lives while also serving as outstanding leaders.”

Ms. Cox will receive her award April 18, 2016, in Baltimore.
