The new website houses essays from its six printed volumes, as well as unreleased oral histories and a new virtual exhibit section. As an extension to its new online presence, SlackWater can now also be found on Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress, giving the center an unprecedented opportunity for public conversation and debate.

SlackWater grew out of the Southern Maryland Documentation Project, an oral history project started by former English professor Andrea Hammer in 1984. Today, under the direction of associate professor of anthropology Julia A. King, the SlackWater Center is a consortium of students, faculty, and community members focused on documenting and interpreting the region’s changing landscapes.

SlackWater’s new online platform was made possible by St. Mary’s College Archivist Katherine Ryner, who, working with St. Mary’s students, archived and digitized much of the oral history collection. The SlackWater archive is one of the region’s largest digital repositories of Southern Maryland history.
