Annmarie AMG MLK Days 2016

The community is invited to take part in creative art activities inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Annmarie Garden’s MLK Days.

This year’s MLK Days project is titled, #WDUS4 – What Do You Stand For?, and was conceived by Southern Maryland artists Jeffery Weatherford and Carlisha Watkins. #WDUS4 uses the metaphor of feet and shoes to allow participants to creatively and thoughtfully reflect on what they themselves value, stand for, and deem most important. During MLK Days, guests will work with Weatherford and Watkins to create a mural of footprints that will be displayed in the Main Gallery at Annmarie.  The mural will remain on exhibit through the end of February, alongside the artists’ “Foot Soldiers,” a mixed media shoe exhibit.

Guests at MLK Days also can enjoy, A Tent of Many Colors: the Communal Coloring Tent, and WORDS TO LIVE BY, a hands-on art activity. In the Tent of Many Colors, guests of all ages can experience the therapeutic qualities of coloring. Choose a design, find a seat, make a friend, and relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Visit the artLAB for the hands-on activity, WORDS TO LIVE BY; Found Poetry, where guests will turn old book pages into inspirational poetry worthy of framing. MLK Days is appropriate for all ages.

Participants should be prepared to reflect on the meaning of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including both what it means to them personally and what it means to the country. What is Dr. King’s legacy? How has life changed since Dr. King was leading the country through the civil rights movement? How did he change the course of our country’s history? All of these questions and more can help participants to prepare for their part in this fabulous annual activity that brings together the most diverse populations to be a part of one amazing project.

The projects vary from year to year, but they are always inspiring and appropriate for all ages and backgrounds.

Participation will be free of charge during the MLK Days event, although donations will be gladly accepted. Donations help projects like this one continue each year at Annmarie, as well as myriad other amazing activities for groups and individuals.
