This weekend the Sailing Center begins its busy summer instructional classes with classes remaining in the Introductory Sailing for Adults and the opening of its middle school summer program.

The first of three week-long boating skills classes for middle school students kicks off July 8th. These classes result from a grant from the Spirit of America Foundation, an off-shoot of the US Coast Guard.  Check details below.

This spring the Center ran 10 weeks of high school competitive team development and hosted several regattas.

Leonardtown High School won the Southern Maryland JV Championship for the William Blanton Memorial Trophy and Churchville-Christian’s local home schoolers won the “Age of Reason” Challenge for the Southern Maryland Varsity Championship.  Leonardtown, Patuxent, Great Mills, and Churchville-Christian High Schools regularly practice three days a week at the Center in both the spring and fall.  St. Mary’s Ryken practices at its own waterfront.

In June, the Sailing Center sponsored a week of learning to sail for 37 STEM students from Great Mills High School.  Even though the week was shortened by several spring storms, the week was enjoyed by all.  The students learned about the technology of sailing as they develop basic skills associated with the sport.  A highlight is a half-day of instruction and practice using radio-controlled model sailboats.  The Calvert Marine Museum provides the boats and instructors

Later in June, the Center completed a week of classes for teenagers who wish to improve their sailboat racing skills. Still coming are:

Introductory Sailing for Adults

Boating Safety for Middle School Students

The Sailing Center offers three week-long classes this summer for students completing 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  Classes are offered the weeks of July 8, July 22, and August 5.  This course is run under a grant from the Spirit of America Foundation to St. Mary’s College and the Sailing Center.

Details and enrollment forms located at the Center’s Spirit of America web page.

Students receive instruction  and the opportunity to pass the State Safe Boating Test, gain experience operating a motor boat, learn how to sail, paddle canoes and kayaks, and ride on a Coast Guard rescue vessel.

The course charges no tuition but does require a non-refundable $40 administrative fee.
