Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative employees are hosting their annual bike ride on June 7, 2014.

Three bike routes of 29, 47, and 75 miles start at the co-op’s headquarters in Hughesville, Maryland  and go as far as Colton’s Point in St. Mary’s County. Profits from the bike ride will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

If participants register by May 5, the registration fee is only $35 and includes a commemorative shirt. Interested bicyclists can register at active.com or go to www.smeco.coop/smeco75 for a registration form.

Last year, SMECO employees raised $35,760 through the bike ride held in June and a charity golf tournament held in September. The events are supported by a group of volunteers, vendors, and the SMECO executive team. The Co-op selects a different organization each year to benefit from the fundraising events.

Natalie Brown, SMECO’s community relations specialist, said, “Bicyclists who participated in our previous events seem to really enjoy the bike route, the rest stop snacks, and the camaraderie. Our employees enjoy hosting the rest stops and providing participants with this fun and well-organized activity.” Ms. Brown added, “We developed the ride with the assistance of the Oxon Hill Bike Club, so we didn’t start from scratch. They gave us a lot of good advice, and their support has benefitted the participants, as well as the organizations that received thousands of dollars in contributions last year.”

“We are especially grateful to business partners who participate by donating resources to help make the SMECO 75 Bike Ride a successful fundraiser. Major contributors to SMECO’s bike ride include Adams, Jenkins and Cheatham, Alexander Chiropractic Center, Cigna, Comverge, ICF International, Infor, IP Data Systems, Opower, Prudential, The Meltzer Group, and Willis, and we thank them for their contributions,” Ms. Brown added.
