Region’s Math Champs Compete
Southern Maryland’s youngest mathematicians showed off their skills and competed against each other in three tests of their knowledge for the 19th annual Elementary Mathematics Challenge, sponsored by the public school systems and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.
The challenges were held at Calvert Middle School in Calvert County, Theodore G. Davis Middle School in Charles County, and Margaret Brent Middle School in St. Mary’s County.
There were more than 770 competitors from 53 public and private schools. Each school had a team of fourth-graders and a team of fifth-graders, with up to seven students per team. The first half of the Challenge was a test of 40 multiple-choice questions, which each student completed individually. The second half was a set of five tasks for each team. Placement for each team was determined according to the combined results of both tests.
SMECO is committed to supporting the education community in Southern Maryland through programs for both students and teachers. The co-op sponsors several programs every year to bolster education, with a focus on math, science and technology. In addition to the Elementary Mathematics Challenge, these programs include the MATHCOUNTS competition for middle-school students, the High School Computer Bowl, the Elementary Knowledge Bowl, the SMECO scholarships, and the Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teacher awards.
