In response to the great need for psychiatric care in our community, Walden Behavioral Health is pleased to announce the opening of its newest community mental health clinic at our Hope Place facility in Millison Plaza, Lexington Park.

Thanks to a partnership between Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital and Walden, the clinic includes L’Tanya Haith, M.D.

Dr. Haith joins a staff of five licensed mental health therapists now taking appointments for care at Hope Place.

“We are so pleased to announce this news,” says Kathleen O’Brien, Walden’s Chief Executive Officer.  “Many people have been working behind the scenes to try and bring greater access to psychiatric and mental health care in this community.  It is rewarding and exciting to see this coming to fruition.”

St. Mary’s County is federally designated as a mental health professional shortage area, creating waiting lists and other barriers for those seeking mental health care.

“The designation by the state of the Lexington Park, Great Mills and Park Hall area as the Greater Lexington Park Healthcare Enterprise Zone has helped speed up momentum in our community to improve care.  Dr. Haith’s presence is part of the HEZ project we are involved in with grantee Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital, the St. Mary’s County Health Department and other providers and advocates serving this community.” says Ms. O’Brien

Dr. Haith completed psychiatric residency through Wayne State University, training at Sinai Hospital in Detroit and Hawthorn Center in Northville, Michigan.  She completed residencies in both adult and child psychiatry.  She holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  Her extensive experience in practice includes inpatient and outpatient care for pediatric and adult patients.  She comes to Southern Maryland most recently from practice with Cherry Street Health Services in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where patients seeking care for mental health and substance abuse concerns were served.

Walden’s community mental health clinic service at Hope Place provides outpatient psychiatric and mental health therapy appointments.  Appointments are available Monday-Friday, with daytime and evening options available.  For individuals without an appointment and with an immediate need to see a counselor, Walden can arrange walk-in crisis counseling sessions.  The clinic accepts Medicaid, Medical Assistance/PAC and staff encourages community members to ask about other insurance carriers and self-pay options.

“We know how many people, adults and adolescents, are looking for mental health care,” explains Gary Lynch, Chief Operations Officer at Walden.  The National Institute of Mental Health reported that one in four adults, or about 57.7 million Americans, will experience a mental health disorder in a given year.  “We hope folks will rapidly begin to take advantage of this new service.  May is National Mental Health Month, so it is appropriate that a new resource to wellness is opening this week. Understanding that wellness involves the mind, body and spirit really increases our potential to enjoy a full and productive life. ”

Additional options in mental health care are available at Walden’s community mental health clinic in Charlotte Hall at Anchor Treatment Center.  At Anchor, outpatient mental health care is provided by Arlene Paden, M.D. and three licensed mental health therapists on staff.
