Protecting your eyes from harm is one of the most basic things you can do to keep your vision healthy throughout your lifetime. October is National Eye Injury Prevention Month and MedStar St. Mary’s wants individuals to consider risks and prevention measures.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an estimated 90 percent of eye injuries are preventable with the use of proper safety eyewear. To be effective, eyewear must fit properly and be effectively designed to protect the eyes based on the activity being performed.

There are many dangers around the home from which you should protect your eyes. Cleaning, doing yard work, or undertaking construction products can subject your eyes to injurious particles or chemicals. And sports such as baseball, paintball, riding a motorcycle, or hockey present dangers to your eyes.

Finally, protecting your eyes from the sun’s UV rays is simple and takes little effort. Be sure to use sunglasses with UV protection no matter the season.

If you suffer an eye injury, have an ophthalmologist or other medical doctor examine the eye as soon as possible, even if the injury seems minor. Even a minor injury to the cornea can be painful and become a lasting issue.

To make an appointment with an ophthalmologist, call Eye Physicians of St. Mary’s at 301-290-5915. Ophthalmologists specialize in the treatment and diagnosis of disorders of the eye.
