Photography Exhibit Set at CSM La Plata

Photography

A new featured artist is about to have his photography on exhibit at the College of Southern Maryland Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery on the La Plata Campus. Photographer Gregory T. Davis will show his “Impermanence of Knowledge” exhibition starting Nov. 14 and running through Dec. 8. Mr. Davis will give a lecture on his work at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Learning Resource (LR) Center, Room 102 with a reception immediately following in the gallery in the Fine Arts (FA) Center.

Mr. Davis, of Nicholasville, Ky., earned his BFA in art studio from the University of Kentucky in 2002 and his MFA in photography in 2006.

“Knowledge is tenuous. It requires that it be passed down, person to person to continue existence. Whether it is through word of mouth, books, floppy disks, or the cloud, this line must continue to keep knowledge alive,” Mr. Davis wrote in a statement about the exhibition.

The artist is most interested in the places where this stream breaks down, the point where the path of knowledge is severed and the information becomes lost.

“Technology changes, books decay, memories fade … all of these serve as a point to begin a conversation about how we store information and pass on our knowledge,” he wrote.

In an interview with Art Reveal Magazine (July 2015), Mr. Davis said, “My photographs examine issues of information and knowledge, exploring the decay of access that comes from the inherently temporary nature of the vessel in which it is contained, or the manner in which it is conveyed. Information surrounds us, and changes in technology, information destruction, and neglect alter our connection to the data. Information is moving from the printed book, to digital hard drives, to mere ether with the exodus towards the cloud. As we move further into the Information Age, how we store, secure and retrieve it is of greater concern.”

Last year, the artist had a solo exhibition in Denton, Texas, and a two-person exhibition in Lubbock, Texas.
