Historic St. Mary’s City’s tall ship Maryland Dove will represent Southern Maryland as part of the SAIL250 Maryland & Air Show Baltimore celebration taking place June 24 through 30, 2026.

Leadership Southern Maryland is accepting applications for its Emerging Leaders Program, or LEAP, a six-month leadership academy for early- and mid-career professionals living or working in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties.
Young artists are invited to explore fine arts this summer through St. Clement’s Island Museum’s Art Kids classes. Participants will experiment with different forms of art, including drawing, painting, simple weaving, sculpting, and other hands-on projects.

It wasn’t only Cedar Point, Jarboesville, and the Patuxent River that were changed by the arrival of the US Navy. Piney Point, St. George Island, and the waterways from whence originates Message From the Captain, were where the Navy tested its torpedoes during World War II.

In the late 1930s and early ’40s, rumors had circulated that the military was interested in the Cedar Point peninsula in St. Mary’s County. But days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, government officials and surveyors began the process of condemning the land. The patchwork of farms and settlements would soon be smoothed over to make way for the Navy.
