CSM’s Nonprofit Institute Conference Set for April 29

Anyone who works or volunteers in the field of nonprofit organizations should make time for the College of Southern Maryland sixth annual Nonprofit Institute Conference, which starts at 8 am April 29 at CSM’s La Plata campus Center for Business and Industry (BI Building) at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata.

The all-day conference is hosted by the Nonprofit Institute at CSM, and this year’s event has the theme “The Power of Connection.”

The keynote speaker will be Christopher Helmrath, director of SC&H Capital. He plans to speak about the ways nonprofit organizations can achieve their goals, whatever those goals may be, in his speech titled “Volunteerism in Strategic Planning.” Mr. Helmrath works with boards of directors and both public and private nonprofit management teams to help them achieve their goals. He also helps them measure their progress, leading to strategic plans for success.

Mr. Helmrath earned a bachelor of arts in economics from Miami University, and his MBA in finance from Loyola College, where he graduated at the top of his class. He is registered with FINRA as a general securities registered representative and principal, and holds securities licenses Series 7, 24, 63, and 79.

An avid contributor of his talents to his community, Mr. Helmrath has participated in numerous Baltimore-area and related initiatives as a local board member. He helped found the state of Maryland Security Initiative Corp. (Cyber MD today), and serves as a board member for the Association for Corporate Growth, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Heart and Vascular Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and as the chairman of the board of trustees at Wheeling Jesuit University. Past board memberships also include the Baltimore County Executive Advisory Board, Catholic Charities, the Loyola College Accounting Advisory Board, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, and the Supportive Housing Group, which helps veterans effectively transition back into society.

The conference is meant to cater to board members, staff, sponsors, and other executives related to nonprofits.

After Mr. Helmrath gives his keynote speech, there will be workshop tracks in leadership, strategic planning, marketing or fundraising, and management. The sessions will go into subjects that vary widely – from using social media to managing your funds and any staff. There will even be discussions about getting the right insurance and running effective meetings.

The fee to attend is $40 for St. Mary’s and Charles county nonprofits and/or residents; $65 for Calvert County nonprofits and any other nonprofits and residents in the region. The cost includes breakfast and lunch meals.
