F-35C JSF night takeoffResidents surrounding Naval Air Station Patuxent River may notice increased operations and a change in flight patterns during the winter months.

Evening and night-time operations are scheduled to take place with increasing regularity and changes in flight patterns may also be noticed as changing weather conditions play a significant role in which runways are operational.

Pilots at Pax River are currently testing and training for realistic night flight scenarios. These events will include, but are not limited to, night vision goggle training, night precision approach and landing qualifications and low-visibility operational testing.

Due to testing requirements and winter weather conditions, surrounding communities in Southern St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties may experience increased noise levels. Operating hours at Pax River are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. All exercises will conclude by 11 p.m. unless approval is granted by the commanding officer.
