Navy Invites Comment on PAX Remediation Plan: Site 28

The Department of the Navy invites public comment on the proposed remedial action plan for Site 28, the former transformer storage area, under the Environmental Restoration Program, Naval Air Station: Patuxent River, Maryland.

Public comment is sought in accord with requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). The site of the proposed remediation is off Peary Road in the central portion of NAS: Pax River.

The Remedial Investigation of the soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater indicate there are unacceptable risks in the soil to human health or the environment. The proposed remedy is to excavate the soil and dispose of it off site. There is no action planned for sediment, surface water, and groundwater at Site 28.

Public comment began on July 3, 2013, and closes on August 1, 2013.

A public meeting to present the PRAP for Site 28 and to answer questions is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 31, 2013, in Room 100 in the Frank Knox Building located at the northeast corner of Route 235 and Great Mills Road.

The Navy issues Proposed Remedial Action Plans as part of its Environmental Restoration Program. The plans describe the background and rationale for the selection of the remedy proposed by the Navy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Solicitation of public comment on the selected remedy is included in the plan and the public is encouraged to comment.

The final remedy for Site 28 will be implemented only after the public comment period has ended. An alternative remedy may be selected only after all comments have been received from the public. Relevant environmental documents for Site 28 are available for review at:
