Myrtle Grove Adds More Recreation Space

Myrtle Grove

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be able to acquire more than 182 acres of property for the Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area in Indian Head, Maryland, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced recently.

The land will be acquired with a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant of $550,000, and the land will be used for public outdoor recreation. The property will be an addition to the Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area, which is managed by DNR.

“I’m proud of the parks and open green spaces in the Fifth District, which provide recreational opportunities, preserve our land and natural resources, and expand ecotourism,” Congressman Hoyer said. “That’s why I am very pleased that Maryland has been awarded a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to expand the Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area in Indian Head. With this funding, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will acquire nearly 200 acres of property for Marylanders to hunt, hike, fish, bird watch, and observe nature. I applaud this grant award, and I look forward to supporting DNR in this effort so that Fifth District residents and visitors will be able to enjoy this area for decades to come. I will also be working with my colleagues on a long-term reauthorization of the LWCF, so that this critical program can continue to support the preservation of natural areas in Maryland and throughout the country.”

Congressman Hoyer has worked throughout his career to secure funding to preserve open spaces in the 5th District. He secured funding to add 8,000 acres to the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, expand Piscataway Park, and helped acquire 6,000 acres in Charles County for the Douglas Point Project.

Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area is located in Charles County and contains hardwood forests, wildlife plantings, natural and man-made wetlands, and early succession habitats. This 1,723-acre tract is located in the forested bottomlands of Mattawoman Creek.
