Denise S. McDowell (RN, MSN, FACMPE, FAHM) director of Performance and Clinical Resource Management at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, has become a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE), the certification and standard-setting division of the Medical Group Manager’s Association (MGMA-ACMPE). Fellowship in the ACMPE is the highest distinction in the medical group practice management profession.

To achieve a fellowship, McDowell first earned the Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) designation by passing rigorous essay and objective examinations that assess knowledge of the broad scope of medical practice management. This includes business operations, financial management, human resources management, information management, organizational governance, patient care systems, and quality and risk management. To earn the ACMPE Fellowship, McDowell submitted a professional paper titled “Rural Healthcare Delivery System Readiness for Veteran-Centric Reintegration that documents the objectives and results of an investigation into a healthcare management topic.

This exploratory study was designed to assess the issue of the readiness of the healthcare delivery system with inter-agency support to meet the needs of veterans and their families. Given the significant military presence within the region, there is a high probability that every physician practice has an opportunity to provide veteran-centric care. What is most important to veterans and their families is that they receive help by caregivers who understand them, are culturally sensitive to their needs and know how to access timely resources specific to their needs. The study serves as a first step toward understanding the knowledge, skills and experiences of care givers to facilitate the development of future educational programs and processes.
