MedStar to Host Zika Virus Q&A

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Health Department, will present a public health series, Zika Virus 2016: Current Status and Public Health Preparedness, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

The event will be held in the MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital atrium at 25500 Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown. Dinner will be at 5 p.m. A presentation and question-and-answer period will be from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The speaker will be Dr. Meenakshi G. Brewster, MPH, FAAFP.

At the conclusion of the March 2 presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe current status and epidemiology of 2015-16 Zika virus outbreak
  • Recall current clinical guidelines for testing of pregnant women and returning travelers
  • Report public health preparedness efforts to minimize risk to U.S. residents

The target audience for the presentation is emergency physicians, internists, family physicians, obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and anyone involved in the community action to understand, test, and minimize the risk of spreading the Zika virus.

The St. Mary’s County Health Department has been monitoring the current international Zika virus situation, and is working with local health care providers to coordinate appropriate testing for Zika virus when indicated.
