Maryland DNR Says Take a Hike

Maryland State Parks once again will offer numerous First Day Hikes across the state on January 1, 2026. There will be something for everyone, including ranger-guided hikes and self-guided adventures. Come out and celebrate the start of the New Year on the right foot.

For a list of hikes near you, keep an eye on First Day Hikes webpage (link provided above), which will be updated. You can also check with your favorite park and sign up for email newsletters to keep you informed of upcoming outdoor opportunities.

Here are two already on the schedule:

St. Mary’s River State Park White Trail self-guided hike 7.5 miles 7am to sunset.

Address: 21250 Camp Cosoma Road, Leonardtown

Description: Get outside on the first day of the year. Start at the Camp Cosoma parking lot and follow the white blazes as it winds its way through the Southern Maryland Forest. Please wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for inclement weather and pay extra attention to the markings on the trail to ensure that you remain on the trail. This trail is slightly hilly and can have muddy spots depending on local weather.

Additional Details: Leashed pets are welcome. Trail is not stroller/wheelchair accessible. Portable restrooms are available at the parking lot. When entering the park there is an automated gate that only accepts credit cards. The fee is $3 for an instate vehicle and $5 for an out-of-state vehicle.

Greenwell State Park First Day Hike on the 1.5-mile Brown Trail​ ranger-led hike 1pm. Preregistration is encouraged.

Address: 25420 Rosedale Manor Road, Hollywood

Description: Meet at the pavilion and start the hike on the Brown Trail. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for inclement weather. This trail is slightly hilly and can have muddy spots depending on local weather.

Additional Details: Leashed pets are welcome. Trail is not stroller/wheelchair accessible. Portable restrooms are available at the parking lot. The fee is $3 for an instate vehicle and $5 for an out-of-state vehicle.
