Members of Calvert and Great Mills high schools, and Mattawoman Middle School, pictured, earned Tournament Champion Awards, from a field of 45 teams, in the College of Southern Maryland VEX League competition last month at the La Plata campus. Their win qualifies the teams for Maryland State Championships and CREATE US Open Robotics Championship in Nebraska. Great Mills High School also earned the Excellence Award.

The VEX Robotics Competition is “the ultimate STEM activity for middle school and high school age students,” and is held yearly. Students build robots designed to score highly in qualification, elimination and skills challenges.

Entry fees are $100 for the first team per school, and $50 for additional teams. In Southern Maryland, approved teams’ entry fees are paid by CSM Foundation STEM sponsors.

By earning Tournament Champion Awards, the SOMD teams qualified to enter the US Open Robotics Championship. The championship is hosted by the CREATE Foundation and is an opportunity for top VEX Robotics teams from across the world to compete with and against the best of the best. The US Open has five divisions including a High School Division and a Middle School Division. This year the championship will be held in Omaha, Nebraska.

The VEX IQ Challenge event, with 13 teams, provided an entry into the world of VEX robotics for teams that have not competed in this venue before.
