Each year, nearly eight million women in the United States are victims of some sort of sexual assault or crime, according to a 2010 study by the Department of Justice. In order to stop sexual violence, it is critical to open communication and raise awareness. Last year’s Walk a Mile event produced a record turnout; let’s try and break that record again.

On April 6, Walden Sierra will be holding its 4th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. Rain or shine, the walk starts at 2 pm for registration, and walkers will set out on the first lap at 2:30. Participation in the event is free, and all donations will benefit the Crisis and Trauma Services at Walden.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. Each year,  Walden asks men to literally “walk a mile in her shoes.” Community members and leaders meet at St. Mary’s College of Maryland to help change perspectives and to show survivors that their community cares. By raising awareness and sharing stories of survival and recovery, Walden and SMCM hope to provide a sense of togetherness and support for those who may have been affected by sexual assault or other power-based violence.

Many think of sexual assault as being a “women’s problem,” but it is imperative that anyone dealing with such issues is comfortable seeking help and will be heard. Last  year both men and women shared their stories through The Clothesline Project and Emma Brady, a SMCM senior and a volunteer doing outreach education with Walden, organized and created a sculpture to present real facts on sexual violence.
