Jay Duke of Waring-Ahearn Insurance becomes Vice-chair of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Maryland this month. The Leonardtown, Maryland native will step into the Chairmanship in June 2014 for a year’s term.

The IIAA of Maryland is a century-old professional association providing education to its membership on insurance laws and testifying on insurance legislation in Annapolis on behalf of the membership.

Its mission is: To ensure the success of independent insurance producers and agency staff throughout Maryland by focusing on providing access to products for both the agent and their clients, advocacy, timely industry information and superior education programs.

Mr. Duke is an independent insurance agent in St. Mary’s County Maryland,  the only independent insurance agent in Southern Maryland offering both health insurance and property casualty insurance. He is the only St. Mary’s County insurance broker to have served on both the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange Navigator Advisory Committee and then on the permanent committee.

The federal health care act  directs states to establish health benefit exchanges and to establish “navigator” agencies to link uninsured families and individuals to the best health policy for their needs.

The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange Navigator Committee is charged with establishing the criteria for selection of Navigators and the establishment of the procedures for their tasks to be accomplished.
