It’s Almost Time. Take a First Day Hike
Maryland State Parks will offer First Day Hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2024, until January 2, 2025.
First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the New Year. Join in Maryland on January 1 for a hike at a state park.
For 2025, there will be two types of hikes available:
Ranger-led hikes: These hikes will be led by a park ranger, have specific start times and many require pre-registration. Please read the details provided here carefully.
Self-guided hikes: These hikes will be available throughout the weekend, on well-marked trails. Park staff and volunteers may be available to get you started but will not be joining you on the hike itself. Please read the details provided here carefully.
After your hike, click here and fill out the form to let the Maryland Department of Natural Resources know about your hike and how many miles you covered.
A two-mile, ranger-guided hike will be offered at St. Mary’s River State Park at 10am January 1. Meet at the St. Mary’s River bathroom at 21250 Camp Cosoma Road in Leonardtown. Start your hike with a ranger on the Green Trail that is heavily forested. Please wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for inclement weather. The trail is slightly hilly and can have muddy spots depending on local weather.
Leashed pets are welcome. Trail is not stroller/wheelchair accessible. Portable restrooms are available at the parking lot. When entering the park there is an automated gate that only accepts credit cards. The fee is $3 for an in-state vehicle and $5 for an out-of-state vehicle. The park headquarters can be reached at 240-872-5688.
