Experience five countries in five weeks at Bridges to the World International Film Series, an international film festival coming to the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center’s Building II this February and March. Five films will be presented between Feb. 5 and March 5.

The film series is a statewide, month-long initiative in recognition of  Maryland’s global reach and a reflection of those connections here. Each film is sponsored by its respective country. Countries include Ukraine, Chile, Israel, China and Slovenia.

Each film will be screened at 6:30, with a small reception to follow. Admission is free, with seating on a first-come first-serve basis. All films are presented with English subtitles.

Scheduled films are:

February 5  –  Haytarma
February 12 – Mi Mejor Enemigo (My Best Enemy)
February 19 – Mubal (The Flood)
February 26 – Ocean Heaven
March 5  –  Trmasti Spomin (A Stubborn Memory)

The first one, “Haytarma,” follows the real life experiences of Major Amet-Khan Sultan, a fighter pilot in the Red Army and twice-decorated Hero of the Soviet Union. Given a three-day pass, he and two friends travel to Sultan’s home of Alupka, just south of Yalta along the coast. They arrive on May 16 and after a celebratory homecoming are swept into the chaos and terror of the Surgunlik.
