WA - Jay's intro 0 00 02-03Fewer assessments can be so informative to a new business owner than a thorough review of the company’s insurance needs.

Jay Duke, owner of Waring-Ahearn Insurance, has developed a specialty in working with small businesses of fewer than 50 employees, primarily because he has discovered during his 30 years in the business that he enjoys it. He has been recently helping some new businesses get a footing in Southern Maryland.

Mr. Duke is a multi-line agent; he calls himself a “generalist” which means he additionally offers personal policies for auto, home, boat and life insurance.

The same as on the individual level, when beginning with a new company, Mr. Duke assesses the property but also the liability needs inherent in the business as well as the health and benefits and workers compensation. Here he introduces one of his new business clients, Ebby’s Finishing Touches, a unique interior design firm that recently opened a showroom on Route 5 in Great Mills.

Off camera he offers examples of business decisions with tremendous impact on insuring requirements. One obvious example he offers is the insuring of merchandise. Ms. Bell explained that all of the textiles in the showroom — the tile, fabric, wood flooring, window dressings — are special order products. They are all typically delivered within three to five days, so remain well within  her two-week start-of-job guarantee. Without the need to keep stock on site, there’s no need to insure stock.
