Hoyer Speaks on Service & Rights on MLK Day

Hoyer

The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off,” reiterated Congressman Steny H. Hoyer during a series of stops at 5th District Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations held Monday. If you didn’t get the chance to volunteer on MLK Day, visit Serve.gov to find volunteer opportunities near you, recommends the Day of Service website.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) began his Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by delivering remarks at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. This year marks the 12th annual MLK Prayer Breakfast sponsored by St. Mary’s College of Maryland, St. Mary’s County Human Relations Commission, St. Mary’s County Public Schools, and College of Southern Maryland.

St. Mary’s College President Tuajuanda C. Jordan served as the master of ceremony at the prayer breakfast which presented Maj. Gen. Linda Singh as the keynote speaker. Maj. Gen. Singh spoke of the importance of “fulfilling dreams,” which was what moved her from homelessness into the military and today serving as the 29th adjutant general of Maryland and as a senior adviser to Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R).

Maj. Gen. Singh is responsible for the daily operations of the Maryland Military Department. As a senior adviser to the governor, she oversees the readiness, administration, and training of more than 6,700 members of the department. Her military career spans 30 years of services, including deployed assignments in Kosovo and a combat tour in Afghanistan.

“I was honored to observe the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at events across the Fifth District today,” Congressman Hoyer said. “We mark this day as a re-dedication of our efforts not only to stand up for civil rights but also to broaden economic opportunity. In Washington, I’ve been proud to stand with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus as we’ve pushed to enact policies that help all Americans achieve the American Dream.”

“We continue to work to restore protections for voting rights, to increase access to a quality education, and to combat poverty,” Congressman Hoyer said. “And we’re going to keep working for as long as it takes to ensure that nobody in America goes hungry, no family suffers from homelessness, no child fears walking down the streets of his or her community, and no eligible voter is turned away at the polls because they’ve been purged from the voter rolls or don’t have a photo ID. So as we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Day this year, let us rededicate ourselves to the task of completing the work to which he called us. I look forward to continuing our work together in the year ahead as we work to make Dr. King’s dream a reality in the Fifth District, across Maryland, and throughout our country and the world.”
