Hoyer Returns as House Democratic Whip

Hoyer Earns High Score From LCV

The US House of Representatives voted Wednesday to retain Steny H. Hoyer (MD) as Democratic whip.

“I am deeply honored by the trust my colleagues have placed in me to serve as Democratic whip for the 115th Congress, and I look forward to working with the full caucus …  We will hold the next administration accountable to the American people and defend against proposals that will hurt working Americans, anticipated conflicts of interest, and attempts to erode our fundamental rights and democratic norms. We will continue to stand up for equal opportunity and equal justice for all, and we will work to regain the support of those who feel that their voices are not being heard,” the congressman said.

“I will also continue working to empower a new generation of Democratic members. The strength of our caucus is our diversity, and we must ensure that more voices and differing opinions are included. We are united in the objective of making sure working Americans across this country have a chance and can make it in America,” Congressman Hoyer said.

Hoyer was nominated to be the Democratic whip by Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md., 7th) and seconded by Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-Mass., 5th), Congressman Denny Heck (D-Wash., 10th), and Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM, 1st). The whip race was uncontested.

California Rep. Nancy Pelosi won another term as House Democratic leader by a vote of 134-63. She had been challenged by Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Pelosi has been the party leader in the House since 2002. Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina was selected as the House’s assistant leader.

As House Democratic whip since 2011, Congressman Hoyer is the second-ranking member of the House Democratic leadership. He is charged with mobilizing the party vote on important legislation, shaping House Democrats’ legislative priorities, and delivering the Democratic message. Congressman Hoyer previously served as House majority leader from 2007 to 2011, and as House Democratic whip from 2003 to 2007.
