Hoyer: Modest Job Market Growth in May

Economy

The US Labor Department’s latest jobs report indicates the job market grew modestly in May 2025, with 139,000 jobs added to the economy and unemployment hovering around 4.2%, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer said.

The congressman noted that while the news is positive, the current administration is averaging one third the monthly job gains the country experienced during the Biden administration, “a slowdown that is contributing to Americans’ concerns about our economy.”

Rep. Hoyer said the One Big Beautiful Act “will heap $2.4 trillion on to our national debt. The bill’s historic cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act will deprive 16 million Americans of their health insurance over the next decade. It will also cut food assistance for 11 million Americans. Experts also predict that the bill will increase the cost of energy for the average American family by $400 a year. Meanwhile, this extreme, partisan legislation will give trillions of dollars in tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.”

He called the spending “reckless,” saying it has rattled the world’s confidence in America’s ability to pay its debts and led credit rating agencies to downgrade the country’s AAA credit rating.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Situation Summary, employment continued to trend up in health care, leisure and hospitality, and social assistance. The federal government continued to lose jobs.
