Hoyer Meets With Local Links Chapters

Hoyer meets with Links

Members of the Mount Rose and Prince George’s The Links, Incorporated chapters met with Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) to discuss the need for congressional action to address the epidemic of gun violence in the US.

“I want to thank the members of The Links who met with me today to discuss their concerns after recent gun violence in Orlando, Baton Rouge, Minneapolis, and Dallas, and the pressing need for action to stop these tragic events from happening,” Congressman Hoyer said. “I appreciate their commitment to ending gun violence in our country and their support for passing gun violence prevention legislation.”

The Links, Incorporated consists of four main areas and has a membership of nearly 14,000 professional women of color in 282 chapters located in 41 states. It is an organization of accomplished, dedicated women who are active in their communities.

During the summer, House Democrats held a 26-hour sit in on the floor of the House of Representatives to demand that the House leaders hold a vote on two bills to address gun violence: HR 1076, otherwise known as the “No Fly, No Buy” bill and HR 1217, a bill to expand background checks. Over the July 4 district work period, House members held a National Day of Action and held more than 80 events calling for action on gun violence prevention legislation.

On July 12, a vigil was held on the one-month anniversary of the Orlando shooting, again calling for action to address gun violence in America. On the evening of July 14, House members and gun violence prevention advocates came together on the West Lawn of the Capitol for a National Speak Out calling for a vote. Rep. Hoyer was joined at the Speak Out by Dr. Wendy Edmonds and J. Bobbe Frasier Jr., siblings of Sylvia Frasier, one of three of Rep. Hoyer’s constituents killed in a mass shooting in Washington Navy Yard in 2013.
