Nearly a month into furlough schedules, where government employees face shortened work weeks, Congressman Steny Hoyer continues to search for a way to end sequestration while still maintaining budget and spending limits. The congressman recently met with civilian defense employees at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, to address the issue.

Mr. Hoyer, who continually urges Congress to take bipartisan action against what he calls the “irrational policy of sequestration,” says he shares workers’ concerns as well as their frustration that Congress has been unable to reach an alternative solution.

“Our civilian defense workers at Indian Head, Pax River, Webster Field, Joint Base Andrews, and across the country do not deserve these furloughs… They work hard every day to support our uniformed personnel, including war-fighters in Afghanistan and around the world. Cutting their pay further is already having a negative impact on morale and will undermine our ability to recruit and retain the top-notch workforce that our military and the American people deserve.”

Mr. Hoyer promises to continue to pursue alternatives to sequestration and urge his colleagues in Congress to work together on a solution that “puts our civilian defense workers back to work on full schedule, provides for a robust national defense, does not harm the most vulnerable in our society, and restores fiscal discipline.”
