Hoyer Congratulates White Marsh for Honor

White Marsh

White Marsh Elementary School has been named a Blue Ribbon School by the Maryland State Department of Education, and Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) wants to congratulate the school for this great achievement.

The school has performed well in math and reading proficiency during past Maryland School Assessments administrations with Grade 3 and Grade 4 doing better than the state average in reading and math every year from 2003 to 2014 and Grade 5 outperforming the state average in math from 2004 to 2014 and in science from 2008 to 2015. The school has held five consecutive years of science fairs, with all students in Grades 3 through 5 participating and at least 15 or more kindergarten through Grade 2 students doing projects voluntarily. This Maryland Green School employs vertical team scoring of assessments to allow teachers to see the progression of their students’ learning. Community partnerships support the school’s Destination Imagination program and its Future Leaders of the World mentoring program.

The school, located in Mechanicsville, was one of six Maryland public schools to receive the honor.

“I congratulate the administrators, teachers, staff, and students at White Marsh Elementary for their hard work, exceptional accomplishments, and dedication to education that has earned them this special honor as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School,” Congressman Hoyer said. “I’m proud that White Marsh Elementary has particularly excelled in Maryland and nationwide requirements in the areas of math and reading. I am encouraged that the work being done at this school will serve as a model for schools around the state in order to ensure that we are closing achievement gaps and opening pathways for success to all students.”

White Marsh Elementary will be invited by the US Department of Education to apply to be a National Blue Ribbon School.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program was founded in 1982 to recognize the nation’s top schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps.

Interim State Superintendent of Schools Jack Smith added his congratulations.

“The Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools represent the outstanding accomplishments of public schools throughout our state,” Dr. Smith said. “The students, teachers, administrators, and communities work together to make these schools something special, and they deserve recognition and celebration.”

With underwriting and gift sponsors, each school will receive a Maryland Blue Ribbon Flag, a $2,000 monetary prize, $1,000 of office supplies, interactive technology equipment, and a school congratulations party.

Underwriting sponsors include BGE, Comcast, Dimension U, Mrs. Fields, NTA Life, Rudolph’s Office Supply, SMART Technologies, and State Farm Insurance. A dinner in Annapolis will be held in honor of the winning schools in the spring, as each Blue Ribbon School will be honored by the Maryland House of Delegates and the Senate.
