Hoyer Celebrates Women’s Role in USA History

MD Primary

In recognition of Women’s History Month, celebrated during March, House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement:

“Throughout the month of March, Americans reflect on the enormous contributions made to our history by women, both by those celebrated for extraordinary achievements and by those who, all too often, worked hard but were never recognized for their accomplishments.

“We pay tribute to women like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Dorothy Height, who stood up against racism and injustice.  We honor those like Barbara McClintock, Dorothy Hodgkin, and Sally Ride who strove to advance our understanding of science and nature. We commemorate the determination of activists like Dolores Huerta, Gloria Steinem, and Lilly Ledbetter who continue to stand up for women’s rights and equality. And we recognize the contributions of artists and writers like Mary Cassatt, Zora Neale Hurston, and Julia Alvarez. But we are also grateful to the millions of women throughout our history whose names will only be remembered by their families and communities for their contributions as mothers, educators, civic leaders, law enforcement officers, small business owners, soldiers, volunteers, and role models of every kind. Their daily contributions to building and strengthening our country are no less notable than those whose names we all recognize.

“I’m proud to serve in Congress with women who are fighting for justice, equality, and opportunity every day. Together, we are working to close the pay gap once and for all, combat domestic violence, promote opportunities for women and girls in science and engineering, and enact paid family and medical leave. I will continue to fight for every woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, which our Courts have recognized as a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution, and I will keep working to ensure that every girl in America can grow up to pursue her dreams, whatever they may be.

“I join in celebrating women’s achievements throughout the month of March, and I hope 2016 will be a banner year for making Women’s History in America.”
