Housing for Visiting Physicians Under Construction

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is breaking ground on a new quadraplex house for visiting physicians. Project Expected to Attract New Doctors to Area
MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown held a groundbreaking April 25 for new housing for visiting physicians and medical professionals.
Located on the corner of Moakley Street and Doctors Crossing Road in Leonardtown, the quadraplex project is an integral part of the hospital’s long-term strategic plan to bring new health care providers to the community.
“This project offers an opportunity to have hospital residents and other medical staff, including primary care physicians, live in and experience our community,” Dr. Stephen Michaels, hospital chief operating officer and chief medical officer, said. “Ultimately, some of these physicians will be attracted to and want to make their homes in Southern Maryland.”
The quadraplex home is near the Singletree and Clark’s Rest neighborhoods and will offer a convenient place for medical professionals to stay, as well as for visiting physicians and other health care professionals and leaders who need short-term housing. Managing the project is CBRE Group Inc., which has been contracted since January 2014 to provide facilities and project management to all of MedStar Health’s hospitals.
“This is an innovative, unique project for the health care industry, and we are excited to be a part of it,” said Chris Linthicum, senior project manager with CBRE.
The quadraplex will feature two sets of fully furnished one- and two-bedroom units, which can accommodate single visitors and those with small families. Each unit also will all include a home office, living room, full baths, and kitchen equipped with laundry room and pantry.
“The surrounding houses have a lot of curb appeal,” said Todd Edwards, senior project manager with the architecture firm CR Goodman Associates, who designed the house. “We designed the quad house to look like a residence so it will blend in well with the community.”
A lack of temporary housing has long been identified as a hurdle in recruiting new physicians to the area. Research suggests physicians who perform residencies in rural areas are more likely to practice there.
“Having the hospital step out on a ledge to create this opportunity for visiting doctors and specialists to come here is wonderful for the community,” said John Parlett Jr., president of CMI Affiliated Companies of Charlotte Hall, who will be the general contractor for the project.
CMI expects to complete the facility in the fall.
“We are very grateful to the town of Leonardtown for working with us to move forward with this project,” said Ric Braam, vice president of finance for MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. “It has really been a team effort and we are excited to begin construction.”
