The Patuxent Partnership weaves academia, government and private industry into a unified force. It is not only a successful approach to economic development, says the secretary of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development, it is the essential approach.

MD DBED Secretary Dominick Murray joined Bonnie Green, executive director of The Patuxent Partnership, in praising the educational opportunities and industry interface already accomplished in Southern Maryland.

On particular display was the College of Southern Maryland, which hosted the “Southern MD Regional Update: Innovation, Diversification, Education and Anchors” forum at its Prince Frederick, Md., campus.

The forum is in concert with the launching of a campus of the University of Maryland System in the region. This includes plans with some initiating planning funds to construct a third classroom building at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.

The third building will house a UMd research campus and incubator linked, but not limited to, unmanned autonomous systems development with the very specific mission of bringing products to market. A research branch of a major university is considered essential to sustaining the brain trust needed to create innovations and entrepreneurial-ism of this nature.

As a host of the “Southern MD Regional Update: Innovation, Diversification, Education and Anchors,” Ms. Green follows Secretary Murray in welcoming the University of Maryland System’s Chancellor William “Brit” Kirwan to Southern Maryland.
