GMHS STEM Students Present Projects

GMHS STEM

As 34 of the seniors at Great Mills High School get closer to graduation, they also are completing GMHS STEM Capstone Presentations, and from 5 to 7 pm April 14 the community can visit the school and get a glimpse of what these students have been doing. The seniors are part of the school’s Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Academy, and one of its supporters is The Patuxent Partnership.

These 34 students completed 100-hour internships during the summer of 2015. Their STEM Capstone Presentations are the culmination of all the hard work and authentic learning they have been achieving as STEM seniors.

These students applied and were accepted to STEM field internships including engineering, medicine, computer science, and environmental science. The internships allowed them to see their chosen career field up close – allowing them to reflect on what they would be studying in college and how they would be spending their careers.

The April 14 celebration, the sixth annual STEM Senior Showcase, will be held in the Great Mills High School cafeteria. The students are excited to share their experiences and make their presentations. After the presentations, they will be available to answer questions.

The school is at 21130 Great Mills Road in Great Mills.

The Patuxent Partnership works with government, industry and academia on initiatives in science and technology, hosts programs of interest to the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, NAVAIR and the broader DoD community, and supports workforce development including education initiatives and professional development.

Educational initiatives are a TPP priority. Collaborative efforts with St. Mary’s County Public Schools and NAWCAD include the Academy of Finance, STEM Academy, Global & International Studies, Pax River Flight Academy, Space Camp, robotics competitions, and science fairs and expos.
