Gill to Help Grow Mental Health Services

Mental Health

Mental Health Expanding in Southern End of County

Each year, about one in five American adults will experience some kind of mental health issues, according to statistics from the National Alliance of Mental Illness. For nearly one in 25, the illness is so severe that it interferes or limits their activities, affecting their lives and their careers. MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is aware of these statistics and is always striving to help.

For St. Mary’s County residents, there is now a new resource available when dealing with a mental health issue. Dr. Harry Gill of the Axis Healthcare Group, has partnered with MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital to offer mental health services at MedStar St. Mary’s Primary Care office in Great Mills, MD.

Dr. Gill is board certified in psychiatry and holds a double-major doctorate degree in neuroscience and cognitive psychology from Iowa State University. He evaluates patients at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, as well as the Great Mills MedStar office.

“We’re focused on providing a continuum of care for patients,” Dr. Gill said. “With a large shortage of psychiatrists nationwide, we are excited to offer mental health services in two different areas of St. Mary’s County.”

Dr. Gill’s specialties lie in a variety of mental health areas that affect adolescents and adults, including anxiety disorders, eating disorders, geriatric psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, memory disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“An early diagnosis and appropriate treatment produces better results,” Dr. Gill said. “It is normal to experience sad feelings or to worry during your day-to-day life. However, it’s important to recognize signs of a more serious problem.”

The doctor is featured in the spring edition of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Healthy Living magazine, which is a quarterly publication. Also in the current issue are features about the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, new stoma services, pediatric sleep studies, and upcoming MedStar events and classes.
