Get Real-World Experience With Internship

internship

The Naval Air Warfare Center is offering 20 internship opportunities this summer to high school students and college freshmen and sophomores. The internships have been announced by The Patuxent Partnership.

This unpaid internship is an incredible opportunity to learn about supercomputers, programming, and how it feels to make a presentation to top leaders. The program is set for July 5 through Aug. 4, 2017, Monday through Friday, and 8 am to 4 pm each day.

Interns must be US citizens and have to be at least 16. The program is held on Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. Only 20 applicants will be accepted, and registration is already open.

Each intern will learn to conduct research and will complete a case study paper by the end of the internship.

All of the interns will be assembling mini-supercomputers, which will be six-node Beowolf computational clusters. Programming skills will be honed through threads, vectors, OpenMP, and MPI, which aims to help them attain the level of parallel processing. Programming skills will also be honed, plus there will be tours of Pax River and guest speakers to the program.

Interns are not required to have programming experience, but knowledge of C, C++, or Java is helpful.

At the end of the internship program, all interns will put together a PowerPoint presentation and brief a leadership team. This will give real-world experience of what it means to work in just about any job, where bosses and managers have to be informed about the work being done.
