Entries Sought for Black History Essay Contest

The MD05 Black History Essay Contest is open to current high school students whose official residence lies within Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer announced.

The essay contest winner will receive a certificate of recognition, and their essay will be highlighted on the congressman’s online platforms. Top participants will be invited to share their essays during a community event in spring 2025. Eligibility is determined by visiting the frequently asked questions underneath “App Challenge FAQs,” or calling 301-474-0119.

Please complete the application form by April 1, 2025, to participate.

Black labor has been the backbone of America’s economic, social, and cultural development from the resilience of enslaved workers to the innovation of Black entrepreneurs and the leadership of labor activists. The essay contest invites participants to explore the rich contributions of Black workers throughout history.

Whether highlighting trailblazers in industry, the fight for labor rights, or the impact of Black labor on today’s workforce, Rep. Hoyer encourages essays that celebrate perseverance, progress, and power. Join the congressman in honoring the past, understanding the present, and shaping the future of Black labor.

By submitting an entry, the winner (and legal guardian) gives permission for the essay, photo (and likeness), name, and responses to the application that are not personal contact information to be shared publicly by the congressional office potentially. The essay and intellectual property may include but is not limited to sharing via social media, e-newsletters, or with national, regional, and local media.
