Dr. John Roache Appointed CSM Trustee

Dr. John W. Roache of Mechanicsville has been appointed to the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees by Gov. Martin J. O’Malley.
Maryland Gov. Martin J. O’Malley has appointed John W. Roache, MD of St. Mary’s County to the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2013. Roache, who maintains a private surgical practice in Mechanicsville, has a distinguished career within the medical field as well as within the local volunteer fire and rescue community.
“It is an honor for me to have been considered for appointment to the board of trustees of an institution so important to the citizens of our community,” Roache said.
Serving on the Emeritus Medical Staff since 2003 for St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown (now MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital), Roache has been on staff at the hospital for 40 years, having served as chief of staff and chief of surgery. He has served as chair of its Hospital Committee on Cancer since 1974, and previously served as the Emergency Services Representative, and on the Emergency Room Committee, Advisory Committee to Chief of Staff, Infection Control Committee, Hospital Building Committee and Hospital Disaster Committee. He is currently director of the new Wound Care Center.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen Association in 2003, Roache is the recipient of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services’ Southern Maryland Star of Life Award as well as its Leon W. Hayes Award for Excellence. Life member of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Roache helped to organize the squad in 1959. He has served the organization as its president for 34 years.
A native of Mechanicsville, Roache received his bachelor of science degree in biology and his M.D. degree from Georgetown University. He served in the medical corps of the U.S. Navy Reserves for seven years and served on active duty for two years as a ship surgeon, fleet surgeon and staff surgeon. During his military service, Roache was awarded the National Defense Medal, Naval Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Ribbon and Meritorious Unit Accommodation Ribbon. He is a member of the American Medical Association, The Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland and St. Mary’s County Medical Society and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Roache is chair of the St. Mary’s Ambulance and Rescue Association and president of St. Mary’s County Historical Society. Previously he has served on the St. Mary’s County Drug Court Advisory Committee, and on the board of directors of Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy and of Ryken High School.
CSM’s Board of Trustees is the governing body providing leadership and oversight of the college’s mission and policies. Members are appointed by the governor for five-year terms, with equal representation from each of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.
Other CSM trustees are Mary Maddox Krug, MacArthur Jones and Julie Sickle of Calvert County; Lois DiNatale, Michael Middleton and Dorothea Holt Smith of Charles County; and Ted Harwood and Dr. Janice T.
