Rear Adm. Margaret D. Klein

The Patuxent Partnership recently sponsored a Cyber Symposium: “Cyber: What is it? Where are we going?”  Keynote speaker Rear Admiral Margaret DeLuca “Peg” Klein, Chief of Staff, U.S. Cyber Command drew a capacity crowd, with over 170 attendees.  Participants listened intently as Admiral Klein discussed the challenges of defending against cyber threats and what needs to be done to ensure America’s cyber security.

As Chief of Staff, U.S. Cyber Command, Admiral Klein directs staff operations and defense of specified Department of Defense information networks. U.S. Cyber Command prepares and conducts military cyberspace operations to enable and ensure freedom of action in cyberspace, while simultaneously denying freedom of action to our adversaries.  Cyber security includes a considerable range of technologies, capabilities and services that extend beyond information and network security.

With Maryland as the home of U.S. Cyber Command and numerous federal agencies at Fort Meade working to address the growing threat, it is also important to recognize and address cyber activities and vulnerabilities at Patuxent River. A key component to creating a lasting and effective solution will be improved cooperation and communication between various government agencies and community partners.

The symposium included three panels focusing on a wide array of cyber challenges and opportunities, including cyber policies and definitions, partnerships, and specific cyber threats.

Moderators included Dr. George O. Strawn, Director, Federal Networking and Information Technology Research and Development, Mr. Frank Cilluffo, Associate Vice President and Director, Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University, and Lieutenant General Robert M. Shea, USMC (ret), Executive Vice President, Smartronix, Inc., former Director, Command, Control, Communications and Computer Systems, The Joint Staff.

In addition to speaker presentations and cyber panels, the symposium included 10 exhibitors from various technology companies from around the region.
