CSM Trustees Appoint Leadership

Dorothea Holt Smith had been re-appointed as chair of the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees and Theodore L. Harwood has been appointed vice chair, effective July 1, 2016.

Ms. Smith, a resident of Charles County, was first appointed as a trustee in 2007. She has served one term as chair and two as vice chair. A retired educator, she graduated Bowie State University with bachelor of science and master of education degrees. She taught for 30 years, starting in 1965, in Charles County public schools, earning awards and accolades along the way.

Since she retired from teaching, Ms. Smith has been active in community organizations, serving on boards and commissions, including the Charles County Sheriff’s Citizens Advisory Committee, Charles County Retired School Personnel Association, Antique Arts Association, African American Heritage Society of Charles County, and the Kiwanis Club of Waldorf.

“I look forward to working with Vice Chair Ted Harwood, the members of the board of trustees and President Brad Gottfried to ensure that CSM continues to be an institution of academic excellence with an emphasis on workforce development,” Ms. Smith said.

Mr. Harwood, a resident of St. Mary’s County, was first appointed to the board in 2010. He has served as trustee representative to the CSM Foundation and a term as vice chair. He graduated from the US Naval Academy with a bachelor of science in naval science in 1974. He spent 28 years as a member of the active duty and reserve contingent of the naval aviation community. Mr. Harwood is now a lead engineer with Wyle, with more than 36 years of engineering experience. He has internationally recognized technical expertise in electromagnetic environmental effects, lightning, and aviation matters. Mr. Harwood and his wife Nancy have lived in Hollywood, MD, since 1997.

The CSM Board of Trustees is the governing body at CSM. Members serve five-year terms and are appointed by the governor. There are nine members with Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties represented equally. Members select the chair and vice chair annually.

Mary M. Krug of Calvert County was given Board Emeritus status at the June 16 meeting as recognition for her distinguished service to the board. Ms. Krug had served as a trustee since 2006 completing two terms, was selected to serve as vice chair of the board 2009 to 2010 and chair from 2010 to 2012.

Dr. Janice T. Walthour, a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, also was honored for her service as a CSM trustee since 2007.

Other trustees include Samuel C. Jones of Calvert County, Lois E. DiNatale and Michael L. Middleton of Charles County, and Dr. John W. Roache of St. Mary’s County. Serving as secretary/treasurer to the board is CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried.

Newly appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan to serve CSM as trustees with terms to begin in July are Margaret C. Dunkle and Jay W. Webster of Calvert County and Bradley O. Bates of St. Mary’s County.
